Observing Consciousness

Life has been moving along at a frenetic pace this month—I guess that’s my explanation for neglecting this blog for three weeks. This morning I had a tooth pulled and was forced to slow down a bit, so here I am.

The last few weeks have run the spectrum of the emotion for me: I’ve experienced setbacks, accomplishments, confusion, frustration, great joy, relief, dogged determination, and a surprising amount of peace given the events of the last few weeks.

Like so many who study Law of Attraction, I often question whether the events of my life are just pure luck because I was fortunate enough to be born in a nation where the standard of living is relatively high and opportunities abound, or whether I’m just a very good creator. That’s what this blog is really about—the exploration of this question. It’s a question that cannot fully be answered, and for which no answer will ever be proven satisfactorily. But my intention is to gather evidence that will cast light on the matter and allow greater understanding, not only for myself, but for others.

So in times like the ones I’ve been experiencing, (which often seemed far from the quality of experience I’d prefer to create) I like to pay attention to what I’m feeling, what I’m doing with the experience and especially what I’ve done in previous days that may have contributed to the experience.

One thing I feel certain of is that when you look for evidence of something, you’re BOUND to find evidence to support your hypothesis. In an earlier post I mentioned a revelation I had that we make the meaning we take from our lives. We look at the details of our experience and we decide for ourselves what it all means, how it came about, and why it came about. And in the act of finding meaning, we accept the meaning as a reality, as FACT.

Seth said that once we decide what we choose to experience, we should look for evidence of it. I don’t think he meant that we should keep a vigilant eye on the door, waiting for something to show up. No, rather, he meant we should look at what already IS and see the manifestation of our desire in that. Perhaps it won’t be the complete manifestation, but maybe the beginning of it, the preparation for our desire to be made manifest. This to me is an act of assigning meaning. And perhaps this is the real power of creation that each individual wields.

In recent weeks, I’ve been focused on becoming aware of the ways in which I identify with the mind, the ego’s false self. When a minor disaster occurred early on in my practice, I braced myself for the familiar hard times that so often occur when one takes a step forward in spiritual growth. It didn’t occur to me until weeks later, that my interpretation of the initial difficulty set the stage for more such difficulties. And that the meaning I assigned to the situation formed the shape that reality would take. Even though I had decided to become more aware of ego and my identification with it, I was obliviously giving it the reins to determine my experiences, granting it power by not consciously owning that power consciously and from a higher awareness.

Observing ones’ own consciousness can tangle you in knots if you lack awareness. And the lack of awareness can leave you at the mercy of the ego whose only hold on reality is to focus on negativity.

Abraham and Seth have both said it hundreds of times: If you’re thinking about or talking about something you don’t want to experience, you are not aligned with the broader awareness of who you are. In misery, step back and watch the thoughts and the source from which they emanate. From that vantage point, you will be aligned with the broader, authentic self.
