Law of Attraction: Is it All About Materialism?

4 February, 2010 (13:14) | Exploring Law of Attraction, Focus and Attention | By: Lanore

In a word: No. While movies like The Secret have characterized Law of Attraction as a kind of universal Amazon.com—place your order and wait for the US Postal Service to deliver it to your doorstep—the truth is Law of Attraction is merely a law of the universe much the same as Ohm’s Law, which governs the flow of electricity, or Newton’s laws of matter. The difference is, we know a great deal about the laws of matter and electricity, but Law of Attraction is best understood as a phenomenon of Quantum Mechanics, a subject we have much more to learn about.

But our ignorance about the Law causes us to get all mystical about it. I’m not saying it doesn’t have a mystical component, but we’ve been using it our entire lives in very practical ways. When we get up in the morning and decide we want to go somewhere and then get dressed and go there, we are using Law of Attraction. Nothing very mysterious about that. And in the same way that some of our physical actions are materialistic and some are not, some uses of Law of Attraction are materialistic and some are not. The same can be said of the laws governing electricity and matter.

Law of Attraction is only one law of this Universe that affects us and we can use Law of Attraction and other laws of the Universe for material gain or to create peace on Earth, or healing, or anything we can imagine. The Laws of the Universe are neutral. We are the ones, both individually and collectively, who decide the purpose and methods of application of the Universal Laws.

Some people would like to draw distinctions between spiritual tools and secular tools. To my mind, our secular experience is also grist for the spiritual mill. We cannot separate the spirit from any of our experiences. It is ALL spiritual and even if we may have personal disagreements about how the laws of the Universe should be used, we are all somewhere on the spiritual path, learning our own way, perhaps with immense resistance to the hint of anything spiritual. But as we further evolve and learn more about the laws and the oneness of spirit, may we have the wisdom to use the Laws for good and to promote life, love, peace, and healing.
