Call Me Bright-Sided: Positive Thinking Works
In an interview with Elle Magazine, Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Bright-sided: How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking Has Undermined America said “You don’t worry about social inequality if you’re a positive thinker, because you, too, can become rich just by modifying your thoughts.”
It might come as a surprise to Ehrenreich, whom I’m a big fan of, by the way, that positive thinkers care a great deal about human suffering.
I’m one of those “positive thinkers”, an avid student of “Law of Attraction”. The fact that I and other Law of Attraction devotees care about human suffering and pursue the most effective ways of addressing it is what drove many of us to Law of Attraction. While we may not waste our time and energy worrying, our skill with Law of Attraction does not mean we do not avail ourselves of other means of improving the plight of the poor, the oppressed, and the other suffering creatures of all species. I, for one example, am extremely politically active and strive to support businesses and organizations committed to helping the poor and working class. Nor does our belief in Law of Attraction or the power of positive thinking mean we think we have all the answers. The truth is, we are seeking more effective ways of relieving suffering, even if we approach that by a different avenue than Ms. Ehrenreich.
I do agree that positive thinking is not enough. At least not at this point when we have so much more to learn about how to most effectively use Law of Attraction. But positive thinking provides a check valve that prevents your energy from draining away in despair. Hopelessness leads to feeling helpless which certainly doesn’t help anyone–positive thinking moves you away from hopelessness, keeps you open to remedies and helpful information you might otherwise not discover.
Law of Attraction is a fact of nature, which usually works more in our favor with the benefit of positive thinking. But there is a great deal we don’t know yet about all the ways we use Law of Attraction, consciously, unconsciously, and as a mass consciousness. There is so much to learn. Electricity can also be a destructive force if used carelessly, but it has also relieved a great deal of suffering in this world. Exploring the Law of Attraction is an important responsibility in our efforts to make a better, more humane world.
